Chapter 5
Throwing and Scoring Techniques
Sweeping Hip Throw
This technique in Judo is referred to as Haraigoshi. Assume that
you have tried to bring the sole of your right foot against your
opponent's left ankle in an effort to accomplish the sweeping
Ankle
Throw. Your opponent, on the other hand, has successfully evaded
your throw by moving his left foot back. You should ignore his
motion and continue your movements by pivoting on the ball of
your
left foot, making a counter-clockwise turn to your left. While
making this, turn pull your opponent's right arm across your
chest
by drawing your left elbow towards your left hip.
Using your right hand, tug your opponent's left lapel towards
your
right ear and drive your right elbow underneath his left armpit.
When your turning action causes you to face the same direction as
your opponent, bend your left leg and position your left foot on
the mat with the foot pointing slightly outwards, inside but in
front of his left foot. Keep your right leg almost straight with
the foot pointing downwards and then swing it quickly backwards,
contacting the front of his right thigh with the back of your
right
thigh (Figure). On reaping his right leg from under him in this
way, twist your hips sharply to the left, while still continuing
to
tilt his upper body over the toes of his right foot.
